Speaking test always makes people feel nervous. Many students are sending email to me and ask about the tips to get high band score in IELTS Speaking Test. If you have a good strategy and practice well, you will be confident to take the test and get better band score. This lesson will share some of the best tips on “How to get high band score in IELTS Speaking Test”.
Make outline of the answer
During the real IELTS speaking test, you have 1 minute in Part 2 to prepare your answers. You should practice to do brainstorming and making outline of your answer. You should think about the answer and write down some points on the note.
It is better that you concentrate on ideas and vocabulary, not thinking the whole sentence because you have only 1 minute.
These ideas will be good for you to use in the Part 3 of the test. Because the Part 3 questions will base on the topic of the Part 2.
Pronunciation
Pronunciation is very important to help the examiner understand your answer to the IELTS Speaking questions. One of the best ways to learn pronunciation is in an English class where your teacher can correct you. You can also copy the teacher’s way he pronounces the words or phrases. If you are not going to an English class, you can go online and find some audio or video to practice pronunciation yourself.
Avoid short answers
You should try to avoid short answers as much as possible. If the examiner asks you a short answer question, you should explain reasons and give descriptions.
For example:
Bad answer
Examiner: Do you like hot weather?
Candidate: No, I don’t
Good answer
Examiner: Do you like hot weather?
Candidate: No, I don’t like hot weather at all because it makes me feel very uncomfortable.
Better answer
Examiner: Do you like hot weather?
Candidate: No, I don’t like hot weather at all because it makes me feel very uncomfortable. Hot weather causes you sweat all the time. Sometimes, sweating makes me feel embarrassed because of the bad smell, which is very unpleasant to meet other people.
Record yourself
You can record yourself by using the recording software or app on a computer, a mobile phone or a tape recorder. There are many devices available now for you to record your voice. Then, you can listen again to your recorded voice, check and take notes which words you pronounced incorrectly. Doing a lot of recordings again and again can also improve your fluency when you speak English.
